On the journey through the Suez Canal your ship may seem as if she is sailing through the heart of the desert itself! The Canal crosses the isthmus of Suez dividing the Mediterranean from the Red Sea, and is one of the world's most impressive man-made waterways, 101 miles in length. When completed in 1869 after a construction period of 15 years it shortened the voyage from London to Bombay by some 7,000 miles.
It is in fact the second such canal on the site. The first was conceived in the 5th century BC by Darius who constructed a series of canal from the Red Sea to the Nile. This was still in use when the Arabs closed it in the 8th century.
